ASSESSMENTS

Diagnostic/Psychological Assessments

We provide comprehensive diagnostic/psychological assessment services for children and adolescents when there are questions about behavior, development, or mood. We have specific expertise with assessing for neurodevelopmental conditions, particularly autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Assessments help to assess if a child/adolescent meets the diagnostic criteria for a neurodevelopmental condition by utilizing gold standard and evidence-based diagnostic tools. Assessment results also help to specify a child’s unique strengths and needs and provide recommendations for services and interventions. While we have expertise in the assessment of ASD, testing is also often used to identify other neurodevelopmental disorders/mental health concerns.

The Process

Assessments are often completed in 2- 3 appointments:

1.Parent History – One hour interview with parents to learn about the child’s developmental history and current questions that the family may have.

2.Testing Appointment – Appointment when a clinical psychologist provides direct assessment and interaction with your child. Assessments often include the following:

  • Cognitive development
  • Behavioral functioning
  • Communication and social skills
  • Adaptive skills
  • Parent questionnaires are also completed during this assessment

3. Feedback regarding assessment findings, clinical impressions, and recommendations for treatment may be provided to families on the day of the assessment or scheduled for a separate day. This often depends on the child’s age and number of assessments given.
